Hurricane Firday Night Football Awaits

Around this time every year, our small town begins to get antsy, awaiting everyone’s favorite pastime—Friday night football.

Our own Monticello Hurricanes, led by second year head coach Doug Huff, are coming off a very much improved season, even solidifying a spot in the playoffs where they fell just short in the first round. The Canes look to provide us with another exciting year of high school football.

Even though the Canes lost some spectacular talent last year, with three notable players going to play ball at the next level, there are still some talented returning players. Coach Huff is looking forward to watching this large senior class, which is much larger than the previous graduating class. When asked what excites him the most about this year’s team, Coach Huff says, “Their work ethic. The players come ready to play. These are an extremely competitive and energetic bunch of guys, and I’m excited to see how they compete.”

Coach Huff expects Greene County to be very similar to last year’s team, with the same coaching staff as before. “They’re a very athletic team that likes to run the spread,” Huff says. You can look to watch the Canes take on the Tigers at Rose Bowl Field for the first scrimmage tomorrow, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m.

Huff is a coach who believes that hitting the weight room is extremely important for his players, and the players would agree. He says the weight lifting from the previous year and throughout the summer will definitely help and show this season. Conditioning and passing leagues are another part of preparing for the season that the coach agrees is vital to success. The team has sweated and worked this off season, getting into ideal shape and participating in passing league events, and visiting camps such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) football camp at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.

After a few weeks of practice, Coach Huff had this to say, “The team is working very hard, and is probably further along now than we were last year.”

Following the first scrimmage against Greene, the Canes play another scrimmage at home against Alcovy High on Thursday, Aug. 20, with kickoff at 7 p.m. The season opener will be Friday, Aug. 28, at Rose Bowl Field against Walnut Grove High School at 7:30 p.m.

Make sure to come and support your Hurricanes at all the games this year, especially you students. Let’s get a big student section! We look forward to this season.

Go Canes!
