Red Devils Hold Canes Scoreless
Last Friday night the Monticello Hurricanes took on the Jackson Red Devils on the road. Although the Canes had more total yards of offense, turnovers eventually cost the Canes as they fell 28-0.
The Canes began the game receiving the opening kick and quickly began to move the ball down the field. Progress halted around the Devils’ 30 yard line where the ball was picked off, giving the ball to Jackson. The Canes’ defense held tight, stuffing the Devils to a quick three and out, forcing them to punt the ball.
The next few possessions, the Canes played solid defense and moved the ball effectively on offense. Turnovers were the key in Jackson’s success and seemed to haunt the Canes all night. Many costly turnovers in different situations gave the Devils good field position and the chance to score quickly. Even going into halftime, the Canes were easily within reach of the Devils.
The Canes battled hard the second half, showing grit and determination. Unfortunately Jackson pulled away towards the end of the game despite the effort of the Canes.
Head Coach Doug Huff took many positive things away from the game.
“They played hard and showed great effort. We moved the ball offensively and played hard defensively, but the turnovers gave them a short field to work with.”
The coach plans on working on controlling the turnovers this week in practice and finishing drives. Tomorrow the Canes take on First Presbyterian Day School at Rose Bowl field at 7:30 p.m. The student section had a great turnout last home game so show up again and wear black. See you Friday.
Go Canes!
