Canes Fall to Vikings

In last Friday’s matchup between the Monticello Hurricanes and the visiting First Presbyterian Day School Vikings, the Canes fell 21-0 after a few late Viking touchdowns in the second half.

The Canes could not hold on as the Vikings rallied to score three touchdowns.

The first half of play was dominated by defense. Both the Canes and the Vikings seemed to have an answer to each other’s offensive playbooks. Jamaric Bonner and Maximilian Hess both had solid defensive performances. Each team was forced to punt it multiple times the first half which resulted in a deadlock heading into halftime, tied at zero.

The second half started slowly with both defenses still running the game. Punt coverage for the Canes was extremely sound, with Garrett Scroggs making the hit on one punt, forcing the Viking to put the ball on the ground and Braden Lynch recovering the ball.

The Viking offense eventually found its identity, scoring three touchdowns late to put the Canes away. The Canes never could seem to get a foothold on offense, struggling to get in rhythm.

When asked what impressed him about Friday, Coach Doug Huff said, “The defensive line played very well. We also had three freshman step up on defense and play well in a tough situation. They played very hard.” He said that this week in practice, tackling is a huge focus. “We need to work on finishing our drives and the execution on offense. Busted plays need to be minimized and we will work on that this week as well.”

Huff expects to have a hard fought game this Friday against Morgan County. “They are a very big football team. Their defensive front and offensive line are big and they’re a good football team.” The Canes take on Morgan County in Madison this Friday at 7:30 and we want to see a large fan base.

Go Canes!
