Dorothy “Dot” Gassett Ellis

Dorothy “Dot” Gassett Ellis, age 89, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, at her residence after a short illness.

“Miss Dot” was born in Garfield, Ga., but grew up in Americus, to the late Julian Louis Gassett and Blondyne Mann Gassett. She graduated from Americus High School and was a majorette for the school’s marching band.

“Miss Dot” received her math degree from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, and was a lifelong member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. After graduation, she moved to Monticello, where she met and married her late husband, David Harris Ellis, on June 23, 1948. They were married for 63 years until his death in 2011.

Before retirement, “Miss Dot” worked for Monticello High School as the math teacher; and later, she served as the head of the math department for numerous years. After retirement, she enjoyed working with the Jasper County Historical Society for a number of years.

Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Carole Ellis Fuller; and son-in-law, Harold E. McCluney.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Dena McCluney of Waycross, Harriett and Marion Nelson of Milledgeville, and Claire and John Sirmans of Macon; grandchildren, Matt McCluney, Michael McCluney, Clint Fuller, Roy Nelson, and Lyndell Nelson Smallwood; and great-grandchildren, Will Chism and Asher Nelson.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept.24, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Monticello First United Methodist Church. Interment will be held in the Ellis Family Cemetery on Liberty Church Road in Monticello. Rev. Nathaniel Long will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be Philip Davis, Jock Ellis, Howard Gibson, Ricky Haizlip, Jim Harrell, and Doug Huff.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2015, at Jordan Funeral Home.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Monticello First United
