Canes Fall to War Eagles, 14-7

In a strong defensive game last Friday, the Putnam County War Eagles beat our own Monticello Hurricanes, 14-7.

The defensive play by both teams was strong throughout the game. Jordan Stone had a very solid game on both sides of the ball, recording several tackles and a touchdown.

The Eagles teed it off to start off the first quarter, and our Canes began the game at the 28 yard line. The first few possessions for each team resulted in either a three and out or a quick first down and then stalling, resulting in a punt.

Only after Maximilian Hess recovered a loose ball on the 25 yard line did the Canes’ offense begin to roll. A few short plays later, Jordan Stone took the ball around the left side for the score, and Bryce Crawford hit the extra point, putting the Hurricanes up 7-0.

The War Eagles eventually put the ball in the end zone once before the half, but missed the two point conversion, putting the Canes up 7-6 going into halftime.

The second half of play was very similar to the first, with the defense of both teams running the game. Each team recorded several punts. The War Eagles finally found the end zone one more time in the second half and got the two point conversion, putting them up 14-7 which lasted until the end of the game.

Coach Huff was impressed with the difference between his defense from the week before.

“We played much better defensively this week. It’s probably as good as we have played on that side of the ball all year long.”

This week in practice they plan on continuing to work on finishing drives and executing on both sides of the ball. The Hurricanes travel to Crawford County to take on the Eagles.

“It’s a long way to travel, which can take a toll on the team if you let it,” Huff says. “They are a very athletic team returning a good bit of kids from last year. We look to compete.”
