TSgt. Roosevelt Whiting
A homegoing celebration in memory of TSgt. Roosevelt Whiting, who died October 15, 2015, was held Monday Oct. 19 at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Leroy Grant officiated; Rev. Jimmy Horton is pastor. Burial with military honors was in Crutchfield Cemetery.
Mr. Whiting was born October 7, 1939, the first sibling born to the late Joseph and Dollie B. Whiting.
Mr. Whiting attended Jasper County Training School in Monticello. He joined the Air Force at the age of 22, and proudly served for 24 years. Not only was he devoted to serve the people, but he sacrificed for his family. He was a humble and gentle man who you never knew was in the room. Roosevelt was an E-6 that accomplished three tours in Vietnam, retiring in 1984.
Roosevelt was a contractor before entering the service. He was also the head of security for Pontiac Foods for 22 years, then retired in 2007.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine; son, Tony, and grandson, Antwan Whiting.
Survivors include three brothers, Harvey Lee Whitening (Judy), Raymone Whitening (Trameka) and Leroy Grant (Erica); three sons, Roosevelt Whiting, Jr., Terry Whiting and Allen Whiting; four grandchildren, caregive, Lisa Manson, and numerous other in-laws, relatives and friends.
Smith & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
