Firearms Season Opens Without Incident
Opening day of firearms season for deer Saturday attracted a few less hunters than the last few years, said Freddie Hays, Department of Natural Resources wildlife ranger.
The reason may have been that this year opening weekend was bucks only. Doe days do not come in until October 31. That is a change from the past few years when every day was doe day.
There have been several changes to the regulations, and Mr. Hays recommended that hunters check the online version to be sure they are up to date on the latest regulations. The printed version had a couple of errors, so the online version is the best resource for all hunting rules.
Hunters may also call the DNR office in Macon at 478-751-6415 with specific questions and concerns..
Ranger Hayes said he is not aware of any injuries to hunters opening weekend, and he issued no citations in Jasper County.
Jasper County is the Deer Capital of Georgia, and hunters contribute to the local economy, shopping here while they are in the county hunting. The Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce celebrates the deer with a festival each year on the first Saturday in November.
This year’s Deer Festival is Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to come out and take part in the festivities.
