Canes Fall to Lamar County

Our Monticello Hurricanes took on the Lamar County Trojans at home this past Friday night, falling 34-7. It was a solid first half by each team, with Lamar only up 6 at half, but the Canes slipped away at the end.

The Hurricanes began the game by receiving the opening kickoff. The Trojan defense held strong forcing the Canes to a quick punt. Lamar then took the ball steadily down the field, eventually scoring and going up 7-0 early in the first quarter.

The Canes took the ball on their next drive and drove the ball all the way down to the Trojan 20-yard line, where the Trojan defense held strong and forced a turnover. They took the ball down the field quickly once again, scoring but missing the 2-point conversion, making the score 13-0 in favor of the Trojans.

Jay Johnson started the drive off with a nice 10 yard run, followed closely by a 15-yard pass from Matthew Hollis to Tyrin Lawrence to keep the drive alive. Jordan Stone came next, first with a 10-yard run and capped off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Bryce Crawford hit the extra point, making the score 13-7.

The Canes defense was rock solid the next possession, forcing the Trojans to take a shot down field on a fourth and long, where the pass fell incomplete closing in on halftime. The Hurricanes took over and ran the ball, expiring the time and taking it to the half, with an extremely close game at 13-7.

The Hurricanes hung on closely the start of the second half, but the Trojans’ offense took over eventually, scoring a few more times while holding the Canes the remainder of the half. The final score was 34-7 in favor of Lamar County.

When asked how he thought his team played, Coach Huff said, “The boys played very hard throughout the game. We did not play very well defensively, and had a few opportunities offensively that we did not take advantage of.”

“These have been a great four years for this senior class,” Coach Huff said. “It would be nice for them to be able to go to the playoffs for the second year in a row. We want to finish strong.”

He says Northeast Macon is a very athletic team and does a good job at what they do. The Hurricanes travel to Northeast Macon this Friday night to take them on. Make sure to show up and support your Canes in their final regular season game!
