Council To Have Two New Faces; Run-off Set for Mayor Pro-tem
Cynthia Miller has won the seat on the Monticello City Council in District 1, Post 2. She received 116 of the votes in that district and had the majority 52.49 percent of the votes.
Jenny H. Murphy also won a seat on the Council by defeating her opponents with 155 votes or 56 percent of the votes for District 2, Post 2.
There were three men vying for Mayor Pro-tem spot on the council and there will be a runoff between Stone Workman, receiving the majority vote with 232 votes (45.4 percent) and Randy Strozier with 144 votes. He and Alton Standifer split the remaining votes by two percent with 144 and 135, respectively.
The runoff election will be held Tuesday, Dec. 1. Early voting and absentee ballots will be available as soon as possible, said Chief Registrar Carole Norris. Check with her office, 706-468-4908, and The News will also update voters.
There was a total of 513 votes cast in the city election, which is 41.64 percent of the registered voters.
The breakdown of the votes by race and individual are as follows:
For Mayor Pro-tem
Alton Standifer earned 79 votes Tuesday, election day; 38 votes during early voting and 18 absentee votes.
Randy Strozier received 62 votes Tuesday, 40 early votes and 42 absentee.
Stone Workman received 87 votes Tuesday, 131 early votes and 14 absentee votes.
For District 1, Post 2
Cynthia Miller received 51 votes Tuesday, 54 votes early, and 11 absentee votes.
Cornell Williams received 53 votes Tuesday, 25 early votes and 27 absentee.
For District 2, Post 2
Shaun Bell received 52 votes Tuesday, 33 early votes and 25 absentee votes.
Stephanie Chaney received 5 votes Tuesday, 6 early votes and 1 absentee vote.
Jenny H. Murphy received 62 votes Tuesday, 86 early votes and 7 absentee votes.
