VETERAN’S DAY

Yesterday, Nov. 11, was Veterans’ Day, and locally veterans were celebrated Tuesday at the Jasper County Senior Center with a breakfast, then on Wednesday at Piedmont Academy, again with a breakfast. The American Legion will hold its dinner this Friday, Nov. 13, honoring wives and mothers of veterans.
The banks, post offices, and many government offices were closed, but business went on as usual for some. The News, and many sponsors, salute our veterans in a section inside today’s paper. It includes photos and names of veterans past and present, and is made possible by the sponsors.
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day and said, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”
Let’s honor the courage of soldiers as we salute America. May God continue to bless the United States of America.
