Cane Basketball Squads Fall

The varsity Monticello Hurricane basketball squads traveled to Heritage High School last Friday for their first game of the regular season to face the non-conference AAAAA Patriots who swept the varsity Canes.

The Lady Canes, coached this season by Shakeirra Middlebrooks, fell 52-49 to the Lady Patriots. The varsity girls’ squad is being assisted by John Hopper and Tracie Glawson.

The varsity Canes, again coached by William “B.J.” Thomas, fell 83-39 to the Patriots. The Canes did well in the first quarter trailing by only four but a strong second quarter for the Pats put the Canes down 35-19 at the half. It was a strong second half that put the game out of reach for the Canes as the Patriots outscored them by more than 50 percent.

The boys’ squad is being assisted by Steven Hopper (junior varsity head coach) and Rufus Whitlock (middle school head coach).

Varsity team members include freshmen Malik Crawford, Tyrin Lawrence, sophomores De’Ivion Lawrence, Ashton Bonner, juniors C.J. Adams, Matthew Lawson, Shakur Sands, R.J. Whitlock, Jakeir Stone and seniors Jordan Stone, De’Miria Glover, Desmond Nash, and John Dollarhyde.
