Cane Varsity Squads Sweep Greene, Split with Jones
The Monticello Hurricane varsity boys edged out the Jones County Greyhounds Tuesday evening 67-63 after routing the Greene County Tigers 66-25 last Saturday.
Tuesday’s win over the AAAA Greyhounds was a definite team effort with four players scoring double digits and total rebounds numbering 37.
Jordan Stone, named the Player of the Game by Head Coach William Thomas, had 17 points while going 3-of-6 in free throws. The senior earned 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
Ashton Bonner had 14 points including 2 three-pointers. The sophomore had 8 total rebounds including 5 offensive and 3 defensive; 7 assists and 2 steals.
Juniors C.J. Adams and R. J. Whitlock each had 11 points. Adams had 1 three-pointer, 8 rebounds including 7 defensive and 1 offensive, 6 assists, and 1 steal. Whitlock was 3-of-4 in free throws and had 2 assists. His biggest stat of the night was 10 total rebounds including 7 defensive and 3 offensive.
Freshman Malik Crawford had 8 points, went 2-of-2 in free throws, had 4 total rebounds, 1 assist , and 3 steals.
Sophomore De’Ivion Lawrence had 5 points and 1 assist and junior Shakur Sands had 1 point and 1 rebound.
The Canes jumped out to an early lead outscoring the Greyhounds 23-14 in the first quarter and nailing down a 36-30 halftime lead.
Saturday’s win over the Tigers had the Canes scoring double digits to the opponents single digit in each quarter of the game. Bonner, the Player of the Game, had 19 points while going 4-of-6 in free throws, 1 three-pointer, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
De’Miria Glover had 15 points while going 5-of-6 in free throws, 12 rebounds including 8 offensive, and 1 steal.
Adams had 9 points, 1 three-pointer, 6 rebounds including 4 defensive, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block.
Whitlock had 8 points while going 2-of-2 in free throws, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block, and 1 charge.
Stone had 5 points, was 1-of-2 in free throws, 4 rebounds, 5 assits, 3 steals, and 2 charges.
Tyrin Lawrence and Crawford each had 4 points. Tyrin had 1 steal. Crawford had 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. Sands had 2 points.
The Lady Canes, coached by Shakeirra Middlebrooks, fell 65-50 to the Lady Greyhounds Tuesday after posting a 42-31 victory over Greene last weekend.
Next up for the varsity squads is a road trip to Warren County Friday, Dec. 4 before returning home Saturday, Decc. 5 for a match-up with Heritage. The squads will host Northeast, their first region opponent of the season, on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The girls begin at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m. each night.
