Jesus, The Real Hero

Have you ever thought about the fact that every time a baby is born, a potential hero is born?

Over a month ago I visited with a man who worked as an EMT for years. I cannot remember if he worked as an EMT while I worked in law enforcement, but I do know him and remember his story of saving a little girl’s life after being bitten many, many times by fire ants. He said he saw her again when she was around 14 years old. I’m sure her parents are thankful for people like him. Imagine, a hero, in our own county.

I have a nephew who is a firefighter. He is in one of those professions that when he goes out of the door, there is always the risk that he may not come back. He does everything from fighting fires to rescuing people involved in all kinds of conceivable accidents. To me and to others, he is a hero. It takes a strong person to face what he does in his line of work. I am thankful to God there are men and women like him.

One of my childhood friends grew up and married a law enforcement officer. Every time he leaves home, he is placing his life at risk for others. No day is ever like another day in law enforcement because you never know what will happen. Having worked in law enforcement, I remember what the brave men and women encountered each and every day. I am thankful to God for men and women like him.

Of course, I could not close out this article without mentioning my dad. He was a very good parent. He would do anything for his children. The best thing he did was take us to church. Another thing he did was teach us right from wrong. I don’t remember him spanking me much, but I do remember having to stand by the TV, from time to time, while he watched it, for an infraction of one of his rules. Because of the many lessons he taught me and for simply being himself, he was my hero.

Of course, of all these heroes who started out as children, each one became a hero in the eyes of one or more. While not everyone will be a hero, we can lead a life that will demonstrate to our children and young people what heroes are made of and then they can decide if we are one or not.

My friends the greatest hero of all was and is Jesus Christ. Born a baby, he grew into a man, suffered and died, so that we might have life eternally. This is why we celebrate this Hero’s birthday on Christmas Day. He gave His life so that we might have eternal life in heaven one day.

May we all seek to be a real hero like Jesus. Merry Christmas!
