Piedmont Basketball Season Nears End

In what has been a busy past several days for the Piedmont Academy varsity basketball teams hosted Brentwood Tuesday.

The varsity boys recorded a 57-30 victory as Chandler Burrell poured in 22 points and Mack Brady added nine points. Piedmont controlled the game from the outset leading 18-9 after the first quarter and 28-19 at halftime.

A 17-3 run in the third quarter put the game out of reach as the Cougars held a 45-22 lead. Tanner Casey and Zach Wilson both scored six points Tuesday night while Chris Coogler scored four, all in the final quarter.

Sam Younker added a fourth-quarter 3-pointer while Talin Anglin also scored three points.

Piedmont had six 3-pointers in Tuesday’s win, including three from Burrell and two by Brady.

The Lady Cougars fell 49-30 to Brentwood Tuesday. Amelia Dodson led the team with 18 points while Haley Tyler finished with six points.

Prior to Tuesday, Piedmont traveled to long-time rival Gatewood in Eatonton to once again face strong Lady Gator and Gator teams. Piedmont’s Lady Cougars fell 54-21 despite 11 points from Dodson. Tyler added six points while Lucy Tuggle and Alexis Dodson both scored two.

The Gatewood boys proved too strong for Piedmont as well recording an 81-45 win. The loss overshadowed a 24-point game from Burrell, who made five 3-pointers in the contest.

Casey was the next leading scorer for Piedmont with five points followed by Michael Edwards, Brady and Wilson, all who finished with three points each. Anglin, Cameron Hammock and Joseph Anderson all scored two points while Coogler added a free throw.

The previous night saw the Lady Cougars hold on for a 34-32 victory against visiting Briarwood as Amelia Dodson scored a game-high 23 points, including six key free throws in the fourth quarter. Dodson scored 10 points in the first quarter and five more in the second.

Madison McCart finished with five points in Friday’s home victory while Hailey Hooper scored four and Haley Tyler added two.

Piedmont’s varsity boys just missed a win against Briarwood falling 44-41 with Burrell leading the way once again with 14 points. Casey finished with eight points while Brady scored seven and Chris Cain contributed five.

On Feb. 2, Piedmont traveled to Monsignor Donovan in Athens where the Lady Cougars fell 58-19 and the boys were defeated 76-38.

Amelia Dodson led the Lady Cougars with eight points while Burrell scored 11 for the Piedmont boys.

Piedmont’s varsity basketball teams will conclude the regular season Friday when they venture to Windsor for region games beginning at 6 p.m. The Region 4-AA tournament is scheduled to begin Monday at Briarwood Academy in Warrenton.
