Diamond Cougar Split with Flint River

Piedmont Academy’s varsity baseball team traveled to Flint River Academy in Woodbury Saturday for a pair of games against the host Wildcats as well as Calvary Christian.

The Cougars, behind a complete game performance by Brock Carter, defeated Flint River 6-0. Piedmont led 2-0 after the sixth inning and then added four key insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

Carter recorded 12 strikeouts and did not allow a hit while walking just two. At the plate, Carter was 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI.

Jay Sheets was 2-for-4 at the plate while Mack Brady was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Wyatt Galloway was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Michael Edwards finished the game 1-for-4 with a run scored. Tyler Mills also delivered a 2-of-3 performance with a run while Zach Wilson and Noah Quick also scored runs.

In the second game of the afternoon for Piedmont (a 10-7 loss), the Diamond Cougars led 2-1 after the top of the third against Calvary Christian. Both teams had big days offensively as Piedmont would score three runs in the top of the fifth inning and two more in the top of the sixth. Calvary Christian scored one in the first, two in the third, one in the fourth, five in the fifth and one in the six.

Quick was the starting pitcher for Piedmont working the first three innings before giving way to Alan Powell who worked the next 1.1 innings. Dalton Whitley pitched the final 1.2 innings for the Cougars.

At the plate, Carter continued his torrid pace with a 3-for-4 performance, including another homer with two runs scored and two RBI while Quick was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Brady was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI while Wyatt Galloway was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Chase Porter was 1-for-2 in the 10-7 setback to Calvary Christian and Whitley and Hunter Whiting were both 1-for-4. Nate Miller also scored a run.

Piedmont ventured to Bethlehem Christian Academy Monday for a rematch from the 2016 season opener against the Knights. The rematch did not go the Cougars way as they fell 16-3. (Piedmont had won the season opener 3-2).

Coach Daniel Funt summed up Monday’s game simply by saying “it was pretty rough.”

BCA used four homers to power its way to the win in six innings, including a walk off grand slam.

Brady, Porter and Brett Bush each pitched in Monday’s game for Piedmont. Zach Wilson led the team at the plate with a 2-for-2 day with two runs. Miller and Mills also had hits.

The Knights held a 7-2 lead after the third inning and then added three more in the fifth and sixth more in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Piedmont’s early season scheduled continued Tuesday with a trip to long-time rival Gatewood. The Cougars dropped their third consecutive game falling 15-7 to the Class AAA Gators.

Quick was 2-for-4 against Gatewood with a run while Brady was 2-for-4 with two runs. Edwards had a 2-for-5 day with a homer and five RBI. The Cougars left seven runners on base.

Edwards, Miller, Powell and Galloway all pitched.
