Diamond Cougars Win Region Opener
After a tough stretch last week, the Piedmont Academy baseball team recorded an 11-1 victory against region foe Brentwood on the road March 10.
Trailing 1-0 after the second inning, the Diamond Cougars scored three runs in the top of the third and then added two each in the fourth and fifth innings before sealing the deal with four runs in the sixth. Brock Carter turned in another stellar pitching effort with 12 strikeouts in six innings while allowing just one hit.
Offensively, Carter also helped lead the way with a 4-for-4 performance including a homerun with four RBI and two runs. Wyatt Galloway also had a big afternoon at the plate going 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Michael Edwards was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Mack Brady scored three runs in the contest while Tyler Mills was 1-for-3 with a run and RBI and Noah Quick was 1-for-4 with two runs.
“It was great to start region 1-0,” said coach Daniel Funt. “The guys played fundamental baseball and they took advantage of mistakes and came ready to play. Those are the things you have to do in order to be successful. I am proud of the bounce back after the losing streak and hope it will continue.”
The Diamond Cougars hosted Gatewood Tuesday in a rematch from March 8 where the Gators in a victory. The rematch also went to Gatewood 10-1.
“We are still working on some things,” Funt said. “It’s a long season and we have time to get to where we need to be.”
Hunter Whiting, Edwards and Carter paced Piedmont offensively. Funt used five pitchers in the game, none working more than 1.2 innings.
Piedmont returns to region play today, March 17 against Monsignor Donvoan on the road in Athens at 4:30 p.m. The Cougars will then host Flint River Academy Saturday at 11 a.m.
