‘Canse Defeat Two Region Foes
The Monticello Hurricanes improved their region record to 7-2 Tuesday after defeating Putnam County 4-1 and Macon County 11-1 on Monday. These victories came after suffering a 6-4 loss to region foe Bleckley County last Wednesday.
According to Coach Chris Jenkins, the loss to Bleckley County was very disappointing.
“Had we been able to make a few plays and scratch out a win, we would’ve been in a great position to host the first round of the state playoffs,” he said. “Tyler Seawright and Braden Lynch pitched well enough for us to win, but a couple of mental mistakes cost us big.”
The win against Macon County Monday came in five innings. “We had to score three in the top of the seventh to beat them at their place earlier in the season,” the coach explained, “so it was nice to jump on them and put the game away early. Chad Cain did a good job throwing strikes and allowing only three hits.”
In the 4-1 win over Putnam Tuesday, Braden Lynch was 2-3 with a double and two runs batted in (RBI) and Cain Gonzalez threw a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out seven. “It was a good all-around win,” Jenkins said. “We turned a couple of double plays to get out of jams, and we manufactured runs when we needed them.”
The Hurricanes took the rest of the spring break week off but will return next week with four games—two of them region games. The location of the junior varsity/varsity double header against GMC Monday, April 11, will be at GMC.
Then the varsity Hurricanes will travel to Crawford County for a 5 p.m. region matchup on Tuesday, April 12, but will return home to host GMC and region foe Lamar, respectively, on Thursday, April 14 at 5:55 p.m. and Friday, April 15 at 5 p.m. of next week.
The Canes will wrap up their final week of regular season competition against Bleckley, Upson Lee and Stratford beginning Monday, April 18.
