God’s Creations Are Everywhere
At this time of year we see and hear a lot of people sneezing and coughing. In the past, I was one of those persons. Today, I seem to do better, thanks to good doctors, reliable prescriptions, and a gracious God, who made these provisions for the sick possible.
You see, God is still at work today, creating, just as He was when He created everything many years ago at the first Creation. The creations today are different, but still a part of His initial creations.
St. Francis of Assisi loved the God of creation and the creations God created for St. Francis. Like St. Francis, I, too, love God in 2016, and I love the creations He places in my life each day.
Yesterday, as I traveled through a city, I saw a single crane gracefully flying through the sky. Among the towering buildings, the ribbons of asphalt, the countless traffic signals, cars, and people, a beautiful bird flew across God’s sky above all the hectic activity below.
The birds in our yard have been active lately, too. Under our car garage, a finch has been busy building a nest. As of today, there is one egg in the nest. The blue birds are busy, as well. One is building a nest in the blue bird box in our backyard. In the shrubs around our home, other birds are building nests. It is a busy time for God’s creations. Spring and new life is all around us. The birds verify this for us.
The trees, bushes and plants verify that spring is here, too. The azalea bushes in our backyard are the nicest they’ve ever been. These plants are full of big beautiful blooms. Next to the azaleas, our European Cranberry bush, or what we call our snowball bush, is getting ready to burst into big white snowballs. Weeks ago, in between cold spells, our cherry tree bloomed. Last week, the favorite of many Christians, the dogwood tree started blooming. Next to the dogwood tree are the fig trees which are putting forth new growth. These trees have roots in biblical history.
In the Bible, God used the fig tree leaves to clothe the nakedness of Adam and Eve. Jesus got upset with a fig tree in the book of Mark because it did not have fruit on it. Imagine, a tree that existed at creation has survived all these years. That’s amazing.
I cannot claim to be as holy as St. Francis of Assisi. However, this I can say—the God that St. Francis loved, I love. The creations and creatures God created and St. Francis loved, I love. Without the creations in nature, this world would be a miserable place when the people around us disappoint us and the circumstances around us seem overwhelming.
It is at these times that God’s activity around us, in His creations, like the little green frog crawling across the porch or the monarch butterfly flitting from bush to bush, we can find solace and respite from it all.
