Hurricanes Prepare for State
The Monticello Hurricanes varsity baseball squad will likely head into the first round of the state playoffs as the third seed in the region after losing to #1 seed Lamar County Friday and then defeating # 2 seed Bleckley County Monday in what head coach Chris Jenkins told the boys might be the most complete game they’ve played all season.
The Hurricanes put forth a good effort Friday behind pitcher Chad Cain but ended up with the 7-4 loss to Lamar, who remains undefeated in the region. Then Braden Lynch pitched a complete game Monday, giving up only three runs to help lead the Hurricanes to the 7-3 victory over Bleckley.
“We fought hard against Lamar and put some good swings together with good defense and that carried that over to the Bleckley game,” according to coach Matt Riden.
“We came out and really put together a good offensive and defensive game Monday. The players really showed how far they have come this year. It was a good win.”
If Bleckley beats Macon County on Thursday, the Hurricanes will then travel to Thomasville next Friday and Saturday for a best two-of-three in the first round of state playoffs. If Macon County were to win against Bleckley, the standings could be shaken up a bit, but Coach Jenkins said the Hurricanes will work hard this week and next week to be ready for the first round.
The Hurricanes were scheduled to face Oglethorpe County yesterday, and will host Social Circle today for Senior Night Activities which will begin at 5:10 with the game immediately following. Then the Hurricanes will host Stratford on Friday, Apr. 22, at 5 p.m.
