Jerry Wayne Slocumb
Jerry Wayne Slocumb, age 67, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at his residence after an extended illness.
Jerry Wayne Slocumb was born on April 6, 1949, in Eatonton, Ga. His parents were the late Edgar Thomas Slocumb and Lester Anne Turner Slocumb. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas Owen and William Franklin Slocomb, and a brother-in-law, Ted Evans.
He worked for many years at Georgia Pacific, Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, the City of Monticello in the street department, and retired from the Monticello Police Department. Mr. Slocumb was a member of Jasper Lodge #50 F&AM for 44 years where his father and son were also members. He enjoyed working the rodeo for many years.
Mr. Slocumb was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he served as deacon for many years. Mr. Slocumb enjoyed many hobbies and interests including repairing lawn mowers and creating decorative, wooden yard fixtures at Christmas. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and cooking. He loved spending time with his family, friends, and pets.
Mr. Slocumb is survived by his wife of 21years, Deana Lynn Slocumb; children and spouses, Justin Slocumb, Jarret and Melissa Slocumb of Monticello, and Amanda and William Cooper of West Green; three grandchildren, Will McElheney, Emily McElheney, and Kaylee Slocumb all of Monticello; one sister, Patricia Slocumb Evans of Palatka, Fla.; brothers and spouses, John and Linda Slocumb of Monticello and Darrell and Elizabeth Slocumb of Greensboro; sister-in-law, Carla Slocumb of Monticello; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 23, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church. Interment will be held in West View Cemetery. The Rev. Michael Jorgenson, Rev. Edward Westbrook, and Rev. Edward Lewallen will officiate.
Serving as pallbearers will be Keith Haddock, Will Perry, Neal Leggett, Kevin Slocumb, Shaun Slocumb, Ty Slocumb, Carl White, and Donnie Nicholson. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Masonic Lodge and members of the Class of 1967.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2016, at Jordan Funeral Home.
