Baseball Canes Are Honored at Banquet

Several Monticello Hurricane baseball players earned special awards at the annual baseball banquet held last week at Jasper County High School.

Pitcher/right fielder Chad Cain earned the academic award which is given to the player with the highest academic grade point average. This year’s recipient was also the valedictorian and STAR Student for the Class of 2016.

Left fielder Garrett Scroggs received the “Pride of the Canes” award which is given each year to a player who exhibits extreme Hurricane pride both on the field and in the classroom.

Colton Clay and Tyler Seawright both put off shoulder surgery to continue playing this season, thus earning themselves the True Grit/Toughness award.

In addition to the standard team awards, Coach Jenkins also presented the All-Region awards, which were voted on by all of the varsity baseball coaches in the region.

Earning places on the first all-region team were Brelan Crowe, infielder; Cain Gonzales, utility player; Josh Disharoon, catcher; and Braden Lynch, pitcher. Garrett Scroggs received honorable mention for all-region pitcher with an earned run average (ERA) of 0.90.

Coach Jenkins expressed his pride in these young men for stepping up and being leaders not just for the Hurricanes, but also throughout the region.

“Their natural athletic talent made them leaders on the field, but their sportsmanship made them leaders among their teammates and opponents.”

Each player received his varsity letter award as the coach expressed sentiments about him. Also recognized was Morgan Clement who served as manager/statistician for the team.
