Rodeo Is Huge Success

The Shady Dale Rodeo is always one of the top rodeos in the southeast, and this year's stands to be the best in the country, as more than 300 cowboys and cowgirls competed in the two-night event in north Jasper County, winning nearly $34,000 in prize money.

The event, sponsored by the Masons, was the 33rd annual event, and although the Masons and all who help them are generally well-prepared, the concession stand sold out of virtually everything during the two-night event that took place with near-perfect weather.

On Saturday, the Shady Dale Community Club held its annual Round-up Festival with music and vendors offering entertainment and goods for purchase, as well as a large variety of food.

The grand marshal, Sgt. 1st Class Jason B. Williams was introduced and presented with a Shady Dale Rodeo t-shirt.

Saturday afternoon, the Shady Dale parade featured horses, wagons, Shriners, candidates, the Deer Festival Queen and Little Miss Fawn, and more.

Cory Bailey won the bull riding event with a score of 85.5, taking home $1,114 for his efforts. A.J. Blaze was second, with a 93.5, and won $922. Rowdy Rice placed third with a 83, netting him $730. Next was Josh Goodson with an 83, $538; Jon Mastrangelo, 81.5, $346, and Austin Williams, 78, $192.

In the bareback bronc riding, Trey Moore took top honors with a score of 83, netting him $954; Shelton Murpshy was second with an 82, earning $716; followed by Shawn Minor, 81.5, $477; Josh Crager and Tanner Phipps each scored 79, and received $119 each.

The tie-down roping champ was Ben Walker with a time of 7.9 and a purse of $1,044, followed by Michael McKool, 8.5, $864; Chasen Lane Thrasher, 9.5, $684; Mitch Rinehart, 10.0, $504; Earl Bradley, 11.1, $324; Cooper Christanson, Daryl Thrasher and Austin Davis split with a time of 11.3, earning $60 each.

Cord Spradley won the steer wrestling event with a time of 4.2, for a prize of $903. He was followed by J.W. Ery, 4.5, $747; Chet Kidd, 5.0, $592; J.C. Duncan, 5.3, $435.96; D.D. Davis, 5.4, $280, and Clint Thomas, 6.0, $156.

Rebecca Owens was the fastest in the Cowgirl Barrell Racing, with a time of 14.858, winnign her $1,182. She was closely followed by Carrie Putnam with a 14.868, $1,028; Terri Alexander, 14.948, $873.62; Taylor Carver, 15.0, $719; Gabrielle Oder, 15.031, $565; Amber Mostoller, 15.202, $411, Lacy Scott, 15.207, $257, and Ashley Jones, 15.216. $103.

For teh Cowgirl Breakway, Marlee Malcom and Maggie Lamb each had 2.5, netting them $1,276 each; Adriona Newbern, 2.7, for $915; Ashley Boydston, 2.8, $674; and Ryanne Heath and Hayley Knox , 3.0, $337 each.

For team roping, the team of Dylan Black adn Stephen Britnell scored a 4.9, netting them each $1,262; Justin Thigpen adn Douglas Rich followed with a 5.6, for $1,044 each. Next was Whit Harper and Jason Hill, 6.1, $827 each; Whit Harper and Braxton Culpepper, 6.3, $609; Dylan Black and Ty Parkinson, 9.3, $392, and Hunter Prince and Seth Bennet, 9.4, $218 each.
