Canes Fall in Scrimmage

The Monticello Hurricanes had a big turnout for their first scrimmage of the year as they took on the Morgan County Bulldogs who came to Rose Bowl Field last Friday. Although the Canes played tough, they fell short as they lost to the Bulldogs, 6-0.

The Canes started off well on defense, with the Canes making big tackles and #25 Colton Clay getting an interception on the Bulldogs first drive. On the Canes’ first drive, they came up short as the Bulldogs forced them to punt.

With 2:17 left in the second quarter, the Bulldogs passed for a touchdown, but missed the extra point putting them up 6-0 leading into halftime.

Monticello started the second half off with the ball; they started off strong with two big runs by #27 Grant Miller and #24 Marquis Reese. The Bulldogs got a penalty for a horse collar, but the Canes fell short and were forced to punt the ball.

Coach Doug Huff, the head coach for the Canes said, “I think we played hard and our defense did very well, but we need to execute better on offense and there were too many missed tackles and busted assignments. It was positive for the first scrimmage and I’m proud of how the boys played.”

The Canes are set to face Lamar County today, August 18 in the Canes’ last scrimmage before the regular season starts. The game will be held at Lamar and kickoff is at 7 p.m. Come out and support your Canes as they set out to beat the Trojans. Go Canes!
