Lady Canes Defeat Ranked Opponents
The Lady Hurricanes varsity softball squad heads into action with Jackson and Howard this week following weekend visits to Young Harris College and Morgan County.
The team traveled to Young Harris College Saturday for doubleheader action. In the first game, the squad fell to Apalachee 7-2. Lacey Rutledge had three hits and one run batted in (RBI) Mackenzie Tripp and Shianne Reed each had a walk and Lauren Mosley was on the mound.
The Lady Canes rebounded with a 2-1 win over Union County. O’Neal Sealy was on the mound and Madison Abbott had three hits and three quality at bats (QAB); Rutledge had two hits, one walk, and three QABs. Also Mosley had one walk and Reed had one RBI in the sixth inning that help earn the win.
On Friday, the squad defeated fifth ranked AAA Morgan County 4-3 on the road. Sealy was on the mound; Tripp had two hits, one RBI, and four QABs while Rutledge had two hits and Mosley one walk and 4 QABs. It was one of two RBIs by M. Abbott that sealed the victory.
Victories against AAAAA Union Grove and Howard were added last week. On Thursday, the Lady Canes defeated fifth ranked Union Grove 8-4, on the road, following a huge second inning that resulted in seven runs. M. Abbott had two hits and two RBIs. Mosley had two RBIs. Reed had two walks and two QABs. Rutledge had 2 QABs. Kenzie Abbott and Taylor Bloodworth each had one walk.
Last Tuesday, the squad defeated Howard 3-2.
“We still have a few areas where we can improve, but overall have played extremely well. To win close games against the type of competition we’ve seen, you have to do the little things right, and we’ve done that so far. If that continues, and we can keep our heads on straight, this potentially could be a special year,” said Head Coach Chris Jenkins.
