Larry Eugene Rakes

Larry Eugene Rakes, age 78, of Monticello, passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle.

Larry was born in Kenova, W.Va., on January 14, 1938 to the late Willie Rakes and Gladys Combs Rakes. He was a graduate of Ceredo Kenova High School and went on to join the Air Force. He was stationed in Osceola, Wisconsin for four years.

Larry was married to Alice Faye Nunley Rakes on October 15, 1956. They would have celebrated their sixtieth anniversary this year.

Larry worked as a train engineer for the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Railway for 28 years. He was a devout Christian who was ordained as a deacon at Trinity Baptist Church in Peru, Ind. He served as a deacon for over 30 years, ending his service as a Deacon Emeritus at Shiloh Baptist Church in Newborn.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Alice Rakes of Monticello; three daughters, Pamela Carter (John) of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Lisa Kelly (Paul) of Monticello, and Deanna Rakes of Monticello; grandchildren, CWO3 Matthew Townsend of Charleston, S.C., Marc Townsend of Auburn, Ala., Laura Carter Duplantis (Cole) of Scott, La., Neal Carter of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Paul Hunt Kelly, Jr and Colt Kelly of Monticello; great-grandchildren, Shelby Townsend, Harry Townsend, Andrew Townsend of Charleston, S.C. and Addison Duplantis of Scott, La.; and four brothers, Don Rakes and Harold Rakes of Ohio, and Lowell Rakes and Willie Rakes of West Virginia.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, at 11 a.m., at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery in Newborn. Rev. Danny Sorrells will officiate.

Honorary pallbearers will be CWO3 Matthew Townsend, Marc Townsend, Neal Carter, Hunt Kelly and Colt Kelly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court, Social Circle, Ga., 30025. The family would like to thank Abbey Hospice for the loving care that was shown to him during his time there.
