Canes Fall To Banks County
Last Friday, the Monticello Hurricanes took on the Banks County Leopards. The Canes fought hard until the end, but just fell short, losing 29-22.
The Canes started the game kicking off. On Banks County’s first drive, the Canes defense did well with Jacob Parrish (#63) getting a tackle, Glendon Graybill (#71) getting three tackles, Chantz Watts (#56) getting a tackle, Braden Lynch (#7) getting two tackles, Colton Clay (#25) with two tackles, and Marquis Reese (#24) and Gavriel McClain (#13) getting a tackle, but the Leopards scored and went up 7-0.
The Leopards were up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, but the Canes had good tackles by Jay Johnson (#3), Chansler Hope (#33), Jakeir Stone (#5), and three tackles by Clay. At the beginning of the second quarter the Canes drove down the field with good runs by Johnson, Clay, and Reese which set up a 22-yard touchdown run by Jay Fleetwood (#14) which made the score 14-6 and put the Canes within one score of the Leopards.
On Banks County’s next drive, they drove down the field, but were stopped short by the Canes defense and attempted a field goal, but missed. On the Canes next drive, Clay rushed for a 51-yard touchdown. The Canes converted on a 2-point conversion on a pass from Fleetwood to Max Dotson (#82) to tie the game 14-14. At the end of the first half, the Leopards were up 21-14.
The Canes held the Leopard’s to zero points in the third quarter with good plays by Lynch who had three tackles, Johnson and Fleetwood who each had a tackle, and McClain and Reese who each had an interception. With over eight minutes left in the game, Fleetwood had a 26-yard run which set up a touchdown run by Johnson and then the Canes converted on the 2-point conversion to go up 22-21. The Leopards scored with 6:28 left in the game and the Canes couldn’t come back and score, so the final score was 29-22.
The Canes have a bye this week but will continue play on Friday, October 7 as they travel to play their second region game in Social Circle. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. Come out and support your Monticello Hurricanes.
