Lady Canes Lose then Win

The Monticello Lady Hurricanes varsity squad travels to Social Circle today, Oct. 6 for a 2 p.m. region tournament match-up against the Social Circle Red Devils.

A win against Social Circle will have the varsity squad facing Elbert County again at 4 p.m. in order to determine the seeding entering into the state tournament that begins next week.

After a weekend bye in region play, the varsity squad competed in two games Tuesday, first losing 8-4 to Elbert County but rebounding with a 13-12 victory over Oglethorpe.

Elbert County lead early in the match up and scored five runs in the fifth inning which proved to be a bit much for the Lady Canes to catch up despite having more hits than Elbert the entire game.

Mackenzie Tripp, Lacey Rutledge, and Mia Jenkins each had three hits. Jenkins also had two runs batted in (RBIs) and Tripp had three quality at bats (QABs). Lauren Mosley was on the mound.

In the win over Oglethorpe, the Lady Canes trailed up the bottom of the seventh inning when the squad managed six runs to take the lead and game by one run.

Rutledge had a big game coming up with four hits, three RBIs, and four QABs. Tripp had three hits and four QABs. Kenzie Abbott had three hits and Jenkins had three RBIs. Rutledge and Sabrah Russom shared time on the mound.

The region tournament will conclude this week with the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state tournament beginning Wednesday, Oct. 12.
