Canes Beat Social Circle, 27-0

Last Friday, the Monticello Hurricanes took on the Social Circle Redskins. The Canes dominated the game and beat the Redskins 27-0 for their first win of the season.

The captains for the Canes were Alex Brewer (#54), Andrew Lee (#66), Shakur Sands (#4), and Gavriel McClain (#13). The Canes won the toss and chose to defer until the second half.

On the Redskins first drive, they were tackled for a loss of two yards by Glendon Graybill (#71). On second down, Social Circle fumbled the snap and Graybill and Jacob Parrish (#63) came up with a sack for a nine-yard loss. On the Redskins next play, they passed the ball, but Colton Clay (#25) pushed him out of bounds to force the Redskins to punt.

On the Canes first drive, Jay Johnson (#3) and Clay had a couple good runs and Marquis Reese (#24) had a good run on third down, but was stopped short which put the Canes with a fourth and one. The Canes went for it, but they were called for a false start, giving them fourth and six. Monticello still went for it on fourth and six and a pass from Jay Fleetwood (#14) to Max Dotson (#82) gave the Canes a first down at the Redskins 26-yard line.

On the next play, Johnson rushed to the 9-yard line to give the Canes first and goal. The Canes got down to the one-yard line and on fourth and goal on the one, Johnson rushed for a one-yard touchdown to put Monticello up 6-0. The extra point was blocked by Social Circle.

On the Redskins’ next drive Parrish had a tackle for a loss of yardage and Braden Lynch (#7) had a deflected pass. The Redskins were forced into a punting situation on fourth down, but they faked the punt and passed the ball which was incomplete and became a Canes first down on the Redskins 29-yard line. Johnson rushed to the 22-yard line for a first down. On the next play, the Canes fumbled the ball which was picked up by the Redskins and ran back to the Canes five-yard line before Clay caught up to him and forced him to fumble and Monticello got the ball back. At the end of the first quarter, the Canes were up 6-0.

On Social Circles’ next drive, the Canes’ defense had good tackles by Lynch, Lee, Johnson, and Chansler Hope (#33). The Redskins went for a field goal, but missed, giving the Canes the ball on their own 20-yard line. The Canes couldn’t get anything started and were forced to punt.

At the end of the first half, the Canes were still up 6-0. They started the second receiving, but couldn’t get anything going and were forced to punt. The defense did well at the beginning of the third quarter with big tackles by Sands, Reese, Jakeir Stone (#5), and Chantz Watts (#56). Social Circle fumbled on their next drive and the Canes began their drive at their own eight-yard line.

Although the Canes got a fumble recovery, their offense couldn’t get anything started.

The Canes began their next drive on their own 33-yard line. Good runs from Johnson, Clay, and Lynch help set up a eight yard rushing touchdown by Jay Johnson. The Canes went up 14-0 after they converted on a 2-point conversion from a pass from Fleetwood to Lynch. On the Redskins next drive, they fumbled the ball and the Canes got the ball back. On the Canes next drive, Johnson rushed for 63 yards for a touchdown. The Canes missed the field goal and were up 20-0.

The Canes defense stayed playing well with good tackles by Christian Pruitt (#72), Lynch, and Sands. Social Circle faked a punt, but the punter was tackled by Watts and Pruitt. The Canes moved down the field and scored a touchdown by a 3-yard rush from Lynch. The extra point from Rafael Perez (#16), made the game 27-0, which ended up being the final score of the game.

Head Coach Doug Huff said, “We played very well on both sides of the ball. We scored 27 points and held them to 0. We need to execute better when we get opportunities and we need to cut down on penalties and turnovers.”

The Hurricanes will celebrate homecoming this week with a parade today, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. followed by the powderpuff football game. Tomorrow, Oct. 14 the Canes will face the Putnam County War Eagles at Rose Bowl field for the homecoming game. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.

Go Canes!
