Canes Post Homecoming Win
Last Friday night, the Monticello Hurricanes played The Putnam County War Eagles in the Canes’ homecoming game. The game was close, but the Canes came away with a win to improve to 2-1 in their region.
The captains for the game for Monticello were Colton Clay #25, Braden Lynch #7, Jay Johnson #3, and Glendon Graybill #71. The Canes lost the coin toss and started the game receiving.
The Canes started the game off very well on offense with runs by Jay Johnson, Colton Clay, and Jay Fleetwood #14. The Canes got down to the War Eagles 11-yard line, but fumbled the ball and the War Eagles recovered the fumble.
The Canes did well on defense with four tackles by Braden Lynch, two tackles by Shakur Sands #4, and a tackle by Christian Pruitt #72 and Marquis Reese #24. With 2:34 left in the first quarter, the War Eagles scored on a rushing touchdown to go up 7-0.
On the Canes next drive, Colton Clay had a few big runs before the end of the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter, the War Eagles were up 7-0. At the beginning of the second quarter, rushes by Jay Johnson, Colton Clay, and Jay Fleetwood got the Canes down to the 16-yard line. The Canes went for it on fourth down from the 11-yard line and a pass from Jay Fleetwood to Jakier Stone #5 gave the Canes a touchdown. The Canes were down 7-6 after a missed extra point.
On the War Eagles next possession, the Canes defense did very well with three tackles by Braden Lynch, two tackles by Andrew Lee #66, and one tackle each by Jay Johnson, Christian Pruitt, Chantz Watts #56, and Colton Clay. The Canes got the ball back after the War Eagles couldn’t convert on a fourth down.
A long run by Marquis Reese set the Canes up at the War Eagles 15-yard line. Jay Johnson rushed for a touchdown with 1:18 left in the first half. Jay Johnson rushed in for the 2-point conversion to put the Canes up 14-7. With 20 seconds left in the half, the War Eagles scored a touchdown, but went for a fake extra point and couldn’t convert, so the Canes went into halftime up 14-13.
The Eagles started the second half with the ball. Tackles by Jakier Stone, Shakur Sands, Colton Clay, Marquis Reese, Chansler Hope #33, and Glendon Graybill forced the War Eagles to punt.
The Canes fumbled the ball on the punt return, but were able to jump back on the ball. Jay Fleetwood and Jay Johnson had a few good runs, but the Canes were forced to punt. At the end of the third quarter, the score was the same, still 14-13.
Tackles by Glendon Graybill, Jay Johnson, Chantz Watts, and Jacob Parrish forced the War Eagles to punt again. Jay Johnson, Marquis Reese, and Jay Fleetwood ran pretty good on the Canes’ next drive, but after penalties, the Canes were forced to punt.
With 11 seconds in the game and a fourth and ten, the War Eagles passed for a first down. With five seconds left in the game, the War Eagles threw the ball up, but Jay Johnson batted the ball down and the Canes won the game 14-13.
Head Coach Doug Huff said, “The team played very hard and I’m very proud of them. They need to execute better, eliminate fumbles, and stop missing tackles.”
The Canes will play Oglethorpe County on Friday, Oct. 21 in Lexington. The Canes will look to go 3-1 in region play. Kickoff will be at 7:30. Come out and support your Hurricanes. Go Canes!
