Lady Canes Continue in Playoffs
The Monticello Lady Hurricanes varsity softball squad are easily into the second round of state competition this week following 16-0 and 17-2 defeats of Coretta Scott King High School last Wednesday.
The squad was to face off with Harlem High School, near Augusta, Wednesday, Oct. 19 for a spot in the third round. Unfortunately they did not fare so well in those games, losing both and being eliminated from the playoffs.
Against Coretta Scott King, the ladies dominated both games, which only lasted three innings each, of the doubleheader. In the first game, five runs in the first and 11 in the second were all that were needed for officials to call it. Mackenzie Tripp had two hits, two runs batted in (RBIs); Shiane Reed had two hits, two RBIs, and three quality at bats (QABs); Madison Abbott had two hits; Lacey Rutledge had two walks; Kenzie Abbott had two walks and three QABs; Taylor Bloodworth had two walks and three QABs; and Lauren Mosley had three RBIs in addition to her mound duties.
In the second contest, the Lady Canes scored six runs in the first and 11 in the second inning. Mosley again had mound duties earning five strikeouts. She also had three hits and three QABs. Rutledge had three hits, four RBIs and two QABs; M. Tripp had three hits and four RBIs; Bloodworth had two walks; Reed had one walk: M. Abbott had four RBIs: and Jesse Caron had a walk.
