Hurricanes Now 3-1 in Region Play
Last Friday, the Monticello Hurricanes took on the Oglethorpe County Patriots. The Hurricanes played very well and won the game to go up to 3-1 in their region.
The captains for the game were Jeff Cain (#12), Maximilian Hess (#1), Chansler Hope (#33), and Jakier Stone (#5).
The Canes won the toss and elected to start the game receiving the ball. They started the first drive at their own 29-yard line. Jay Johnson (#30) and Colton Clay (#25) rushed very well on the opening drive which led to Johnson rushing for a one-yard touchdown with 8:12 left in the first quarter. The Canes went up 7-0 after Rafael Perez (#16) made the extra point.
On the Patriots first drive, the Canes had big tackles by Clay, Marquis Reese (#24), and two tackles by Braden Lynch (#7). The Patriots fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Chantz Watts (#56).
The Canes didn’t do much on their second drive and were forced to punt the ball. The Patriots moved the ball down the field on their second drive, but they were stopped short after Johnson intercepted a pass to give the Canes the ball at their own 43-yard line. Big runs by Clay and Johnson on the Canes’ drive led to a three-yard touchdown run by Clay and put the team up 13-0 with 11:04 left in the first half of the game.
On the Patriots’ next drive, the Canes had tackles by Stone, Shakur Sands (#4), Max Dotson (#82), Lynch, and Johnson. The Patriots were marching down the field, but were stopped short when Reese intercepted the ball and gave the Canes the ball on their own 11-yard line. The Canes had big runs by Johnson, Lynch, Reese, and Hess, but the Canes were stopped short on fourth down. At halftime, the Canes still led 13-0.
The Canes started the second half kicking off. The defense came out strong again in the second half opening up with a tackle by Dylan Jackson #20 and Lynch and an interception by Jackson.
On their first offensive possession in the second half, the Canes fumbled the ball and the Patriots got the ball back. On the next drive, Johnson rushes long to help set up a touchdown by Hess which put the Canes up 20-0 after Perez made the extra point. Tackles by Jamel Gude (#88), Watts, and Andrew Lee (#66) helped force the Patriots to punt.
Big rushes by Hess and Lynch helped set up a touchdown run by Johnson to put the Canes up 27-0 after Perez made the extra point with 8:17 left in the game. On the Canes next possession, Johnson had long rushes to set up a touchdown run by Reese to put the Canes up 34-0 after Perez makes the extra point with 5:16 left in the game. The final score ends up 34-6.
Head Coach Doug Huff said, “We played well and I am very proud of the team. We still need to stop missing tackles, get better at executing on offense and defense, and get better on special teams.”
The Canes will take on Elbert County Friday, October 28 at Rose Bowl field. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. It will be the pink out game, so don’t forget to wear pink.
