JV Cougars End Season with Loss
Piedmont Academy’s junior varsity football team wrapped up its 2016 season last Thursday as the Cougars traveled to Bethlehem Christian Academy.
The JV team fell 46-14 but coaches said the players learned a great deal during the season.
BCA jumped out to an 8-0 lead following a six-play, 53-yard drive to start the game. Piedmont responded with a scoring drive of its own capped by a five-yard run by Dylan Coe on fourth and goal. The Cougar possession was set up by a kickoff return to the one-yard line by Trent Coots. The point after attempt failed to leave the scored at 8-6 with 2:53 remaining in the first quarter.
The Knights added another touchdown on their second series of the half moving 54 yards in four plays. Tanner Locklear made a key tackle for the Piedmont defense during the drive after Drake Coody made a stop on the kickoff.
The JV Cougars continued to battle, however, and also scored on their second possession of the first half. Coe connected with Locklear on a 52-yard pass on the last play of the first quarter. After Coe connected with Coody, Piedmont was within 16-14.
Vaugh and Zach Spivey both made defensive stops in the first half for Piedmont. Vaugh also recovered an onsides kick in the first half for the JV Cougars.
Leading the way on the offense line for Coach Hawkes’ team were Ryan Reeves, Cody Vaughn, Matthew Griffin, Mark Hicks, and Blake Calhoun.
BCA’s offense, however, proved too strong for the JV Cougars to stop the rest of the game as the Knights would score on each of their possessions except one in route to the win.
Piedmont captains for the game were Hagan Hinson, Coe, Ezra King and Payton Wallace.
