Canes Fall To Rabun; Prep for Playoffs
The Monticello Hurricanes played the Rabun County Wildcats last Friday. The Canes played hard, but lost 55-14.
The captains for the game were Jay Johnson (#3), Glendon Graybill (#71), Colton Clay (#25), and Andrew Lee (#66). Rabun County started the game off receiving the ball. The Wildcats pushed quick down the field to score a touchdown to go up 7-0, but the Canes had tackles by Jakier Stone (#5), Braden Lynch (#7), Clay, and Johnson. The Canes could not get much going on their first drive and were forced to punt the ball away.
The Canes’ defense stood stronger on the Wildcats next drive with tackles by Johnson, Marquis Reese (#24), Clay, and Lynch who all had two tackles and Graybill with one tackle, but Rabun County scored to go up 14-0.
The Canes still couldn’t get much started on offense and were forced to punt again. On Rabun County’s next drive, the Wildcats fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Cane Maximilian Hess (#1)
On the Wildcats’ next drive, the Canes had tackles by Gavriel McClain (#13), Stone, and Lynch. The Wildcats scored to go up 21-0 with 11:10 left in the first half. On the Hurricanes’ next drive, Clay and Johnson had a few good rushes, but they were forced to punt the ball away again. On the Wildcats’ next drive, the Canes forced them to punt after tackles by Reese and two tackles by Lynch. On the Wildcats’ next drive, the Canes had tackles by Max Dotson (#82), Chantz Watts (#56), Johnson, and Clay to keep the Wildcats to just a field goal. At halftime, Rabun County was up 24-0.
The Canes started the second half with the ball. On the kickoff, Stone received the kick and returned the ball for a touchdown. The score was 24-7 after Rafael Perez (#16) made the extra point. The Canes played tough on defense with a tackle by Jay Fleetwood (#14), Dotson, Lee, Hess, and two tackles by Lynch and Clay. At the end of the third quarter, the Wildcats were up 34-7. Rabun County scored at the beginning of the fourth quarter to go up 41-7. Johnson returned the kickoff for a touchdown and Perez made the extra point to make the score 41-14. The final score of the game was 55-14.
Head Coach Doug Huff said, “We played hard, but not very well. We did well on kickoff return and we competed hard. We had too many missed tackles and we need to execute better on offense.”
The Monticello Hurricanes will travel to Hapeville Charter for the first round of state playoffs on Friday, November 11. Kickoff will be at 7:30. Come out and support your Hurricanes.
