Canes Win Basketball Opener

Monticello Hurricane varsity basketball player C.J. Adams scored 29 points in the teams 69-65 victory over the Jones County Greyhounds Tuesday night. Adams also earned six rebounds. Ashton Bonner scored 20 points and had four rebounds.

Head Coach William “B.J.” Thomas said 14 missed free throws kept the game much closer than it should have been. The Hurricane basketball teams hosted its season opener against the non-conference rival program following a successful Midnight Madness event Saturday evening.

The event, held annually, raises funds for the athletic program and gets players and fans excited about the beginning of basketball season. Fans and spectators were able to test their skills in the free throw contest. The event also featured a three point shoot out, slam dunk contest, intra-squad scrimmage, and drawings. The squads were scheduled to play in a scrimmage against Clarkston last Friday but it was cancelled.

The season will continue as the Canes travel to Greene County on Saturday, Nov. 19 beginning at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity boys followed by the varsity squads. The varsity boys are scheduled to travel to Dorman S.C. Monday, Nov. 21 through Wednesday, Nov. 23 for an invitational tournament.
