Mary Jane Gazaway Kitchens
Mary Jane Gazaway Kitchens, age 70, of Eatonton, formerly of Monticello, passed away Monday, Jan. 2, 2017, at her daughter’s residence surrounded by her loving family.
Mary Kitchens was born in Cumming, to the late R. J. Gazaway and Mary Nell Ethridge Gazaway. She lived in Douglasville, for a number of years until moving to Monticello in 1971; and later, moved to Eatonton 15 years ago.
Mrs. Kitchens loved to play softball, fish, and make quilts, especially quilting for her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Smithboro Baptist Church.
She was lovingly known as “Nanny Mary” by the numerous children she cared for in Monticello; and “Granny” by her grandchildren, great- grandchildren and family friends.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Sleda Kitchens; and brother, William J. Gazaway.
She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Walker P. Kitchens, Sr. of Eatonton; children, Tracey (Robert) Johnston of Monticello, Alice (Chris) Evans of Monticello, Tammy (Allen) Bales of Monticello, and Walker P. Kitchens, Jr. of Eatonton; grandchildren, Chloe Davis, Emily Phillips, Nicholas Johnston, Morgan Matthews, Carlie Evans, Mary Mac Evans, Rileigh Evans, Baylee Evans, Amanda Cooper, Madison Fish, Hannah Williams, Luke Bales, Jonathan Kitchens, Jordan Kitchens, Kayla Brown; great-grandchildren, Laynie Matthews, Westin Matthews, J. W. Kitchens, Mackenzie Rae Phillips, Kaystin Brown and Josiah Williams; and sisters and sister-in-law, Inez Blanton of Norman, Okla., Louise Roberts of Douglasville, Betty Pritchet of Ellijay and Hattie Gazaway of Morganton.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at Smithboro Baptist Church in Monticello. Interment will be in West View Cemetery in Monticello. Dr. Randal Reese and Dr. Jeff Pangle will officiate.
Serving as pallbearers will be Nicholas Johnston, Cody Matthews, Luke Bales, B. J. Williams, Billy Phillips, and Rick Gazaway.
The family was to receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at Jordan Funeral Home; and from noon until 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at Smithboro Baptist Church.
