Lillious Dayton Malone, Jr.

Lillious Dayton Malone, Jr., age 85, known to family and friends as Dayton, passed away on Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, in Townsend, Ga., while visiting friends.

Dayton Malone was born in Macon, Ga., to the late Lillious D. Malone, Sr. and Leona Goolsby Malone. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John B. Malone of Pleasanton, Calif.; brother-in-law, W. Kenneth Carithers of Morrow; and niece, Brenda Carithers of Morrow.

Dayton was a 1947 graduate of Lanier High School, and received a B. S. degree in history from Mercer University in June of 1958, where he was a member of SAE Fraternity. After completing college, he served in the U. S. Army; and taught history in several counties throughout Georgia, which impacted the lives of many students. Some have remained friends of Dayton through the years.

Dayton also spent many years as a shrimper on the Georgia coast and enjoyed reading and sculpting as a free lance artist. He was an award winning sculptor, winning an award for his Manatee sculpture. Dayton shared his love for gourmet cooking with his nieces and the many friends he made over his lifetime.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Louise Carithers of Morrow; former sister-in-law, Jean (Bob) Walrath of Greenwood, S.C.; nieces, Cathy (Scotty) Hunt of Lilburn, Marsha Guice of Hiawassee, Melanie (Phil) Gilbert of Locust Grove, Erin Malone Hightower of Boston, Mass., and Amy Malone (David) Splittgerber of Columbia, S.C.; and 16 great-nieces and great-nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017, at the McKissack-Goolsby Family Cemetery in Hillsboro. Rev. Phillips Gilbert will officiate.

Serving as pallbearers will be Scotty Dumas, Sidney Dumas, Gary Marsh, Bobby Goolsby, Jimmy Goolsby, Van Manley, Greg Manley, Leon Manley, Larry Manley, Micah Gilbert, Michael Mainland, Charles Turner and John Dumas.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Loraine Dumas Outreach Ministry, 150 Sugar Hill Road, Hillsboro, Ga. 31038.
