Cougars Are Swept

Piedmont Academy’s varsity basketball teams were both swept in action last weekend.

The Lady Cougars fell to Brentwood 57-15 in Sandersville last Friday before dropping a 36-28 contest to Covenant Academy in Macon on Saturday. Piedmont’s varsity boys, meanwhile, were defeated by both Brentwood (63-49) and Covenant (63-43.)

Haley Ann Frank led the Lady Cougars against Brentwood in region play with four points with Neely Bradford scoring three. Deacon Robinson, Madison McCart, Gracie Hunt and Sydney Stroud all scored two points.

In Saturday’s non-region game against Covenant, Frank once again led the team with nine points and McCart added six while Ava Anglin scored five and Hunt finished with four.

Madison Burnham and Hailey Hooper both scored two points.

A 15-point effort by Sam Wright and a 10-point performance by Caleb Coffey weren’t enough for the Piedmont boys against Brentwood last Friday. Chris McClain just missed finishing in double digits with nine points.

Joseph Anderson added six points while Dylan Coe scored four and Sam Younker and Tate Marks both added two points. J.T. Webb converted a free throw in the second quarter.

In Saturday’s game in Macon, Coffey scored a team-high 17 points with Marks finishing with 10 and Wright adding nine. Webb (3), Caden Clark (2) and Coe (2) also contributed offensively.

The struggles continued for the Piedmont teams Tuesday in region play at home against Windsor. The Lady Cougars fell 53-19 with Frank finishing as the leading scorer with six points and McCart adding four. Hooper finished with three points.

The Windsor Academy boys, likely set for a deep postseason run, defeated Piedmont 93-35 Tuesday. Coffey led the Cougars with nine points while Webb, Coe and Marks each scored seven.

Piedmont’s varsity basketball teams will close out the regular season Friday, Feb. 10 with region games at Briarwood Academy in Warrenton beginning at 6 p.m.

The Region 4-AA tournament, hosted by Piedmont, will begin next week. Thomas Jefferson, Monsignor Donovan, Windsor, Brentwood, Briarwood and Piedmont are competing. The tournament will be from Tuesday through Friday, Feb. 14-17 with four games each day beginning at 4 p.m.
