Knights Baseball Begins
The Shiloh Knights varsity baseball team kicked off its 2017 season February 17 in Marietta against Johnson Ferry Academy.
The Knights took the lead late in the game in a 7-5 win in its season opener. The game was tied at five with the Knights batting in the sixth run to capture the lead not held since the first inning.
Caleb Compton drove in one when he tripled in the first inning. After the Knights scored two more runs in the top of the second, Johnson Ferry answered with two of their own. The Knights scored again in the third when Parker Wyatt singled and Micah Compton doubled driving in three more. Johnson Ferry knotted the game up at five in the bottom of the third however, that was as far as they would get.
The Knights put up two more with two hit batters with bases loaded and Compton pitching the last two innings scoreless leading the Knights to the win. The Knights collected nine hits with Trent Raines, Wyatt, Sam Filkins and Compton collected multiple hits.
Last Tuesday, the Knights opened their home schedule hosting the Covington Academy Bulldogs. Compton pitched a shut out in the 4-0 win. He allowed just one hit and struck out 11 over six innings. The Knights weren’t able to break the 0 tie until the bottom of the fourth when Jeremiah Hicks drew a walk then stole second base. After a throwing error, Hicks scored and the bats for the Knights rallied from the scoring spark. Austin Cumbess, Wyatt, Raines each drove in hard earned runs for the Knights in the inning taking the win.
Looking to start their season 3-0, the Knights played host to Arlington Academy from Fairburn last Thursday. However, strong pitching and slow bats stranded too many runners on base handing the Knights a 10-3 loss despite a solid plate
appearance by Caleb Dinn and Wyatt who both went 4-4. Arlington took the lead in the first with a sac fly. The game was tied at two through three innings until Wyatt gave up a three run homerun breaking the game open for Arlington.
Arlington racked up five stolen bases and with 12 hits pulled away for good in the fourth inning.
