Diamond Cougars Have Successful Week
Piedmont Academy’s varsity baseball team cruised to a 10-0 home victory against Thomas Jefferson last week as Brock Carter turned in another quality pitching performance.
The Cougars scored three runs in both the second and third innings and two more in the fourth. Piedmont then pushed runs across in the fifth and sixth innings to close the contest out.
Carter recorded 10 strikeouts and allowed just three hits in six innings of work.
Offensively, Mack Brady was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Wyatt Galloway was 2-for-3 with two runs. Michael Edwards was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Jay Sheets was 1-for-3 and drove in two runs and Rob Allgood scored two runs while going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Chase Porter (1-for-2, one run, one RBI), Owen Brady (1-for-2, one run, one RBI) and Tyler Mills (1-for-3, one run, two RBI) also contributed offensively.
Mack Brady and Mills both homered while Mack Brady, Porter and Galloway each doubled.
The Cougars returned to region play last Friday with an 8-0 region win at Monsignor Donovan in Athens.
Marks pitched the first six innings before Porter closed out the seventh. Piedmont jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never let its opponent in the game. Marks had a solid outing with 10 strikeouts while allowing just one hit. Porter struck out three batters.
Sheets finished 2-of-3 and drove in two runs. Marks was 1-for-2 with two runs while Edwards crossed home three times. Owen Brady was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Mack Brady was 1-for-4. Allgood finished 1-for-2.
Coach Wes Tanner’s team then hosted Gatewood and Flint River River on Saturday. The Cougars held off the Gatewood Gators 11-6 behind the combined pitching efforts of Mack Brady, Porter and Edwards. The trio only allowed three hits but the Gators stayed in the game on 12 walks.
Leading the way offensively for the Cougars were Mack Brady (3-for-4, two runs), Carter (3-for-3, two runs), Sheets (1-for-3, four RBI), Allgood (1-for-4, two RBI), Porter (one RBI), Marks (one run), Mills (1-for-1, one twos), Edwards (1-for-1, three runs) and Clayton Carter (one run.)
The successful day—and week–continued Saturday with an 8-2 victory against Flint River.
Sam Wright earned the win going all seven innings scattering five hits while striking out four.
Brock Carter was 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Caleb Faircloth finished 1-for-3 with a run and three RBI against the Flint River Wildcats. Galloway, Marks, Owen Brady, Wright, Mills, Clayton Carter and Dylan Coe each contributed offensively.
Piedmont’s varsity baseball team, now 9-2 overall and 3-0 in region, will return to action today, March 30 at Thomas Jefferson in non-region play and Friday, March 31 in region action against Briarwood at home. Both games begin at 4:30 p.m.
