Market Opens Saturday

The Monticello – Jasper County Chamber of Commerce announces that the Market on the Square opens this Saturday, May 6. The weekly Saturday market is open from 8 am- noon.

The season will kick-off with a “Shop Small,” “Shop Local.” theme. Shop from over 30 market vendors both on the Square, around the Square, and inside the Visitors’ Center.

Make plans to join the market for lunch. The First United Methodist Church Men’s Spring BBQ will be available for $8 per plate at 11:30 a.m. (until sold out).

Direct sales and handmade crafts will be available inside the Visitors’ Center. Also in the Visitors’ Center is an art display featuring local artists Katie Cannon, Jill Dyer, Lee Jordan, and Jeanne Trammell. Several of the downtown merchants will have sidewalk sales.

The vendors are excited to share their weekly items. Shane and Jennifer Whitmire with Wholistic Farms located in Jasper County will feature organic produce. Look for favorites like homemade pies, canned goods, plants, herbs, fresh vegetables and fruits, cheese, soaps, baked items, pork skins, boiled peanuts and more!

Featured on opening day will be authors Stone Workman and Linda Aldridge who will be autographing their newly released children’s book, A Mother’s Love.

The book features a story Mr. Workman first told as a Mother’s Day children’s church sermon, and repeated each year since it is so popular. Local artist Mrs. Aldridge spent considerable time working to make sure she got each detail right on the drawings.

The book would make a wonderful mother’s day gift, as it is a story of a mother’s love, like the title indicates. The pair will also be selling copies of their first book, Animals at the Manger, which is really a Christmas book, but can be enjoyed anytime. There is a coloring book to accompany that book. In addition, copies of The Liberty Guild, a novel by Mrs. Aldridge will also be available.

The Chamber of Commerce is a member of Georgia Grown. Local and Georgia grown fruits and vegetables are encouraged, welcomed, and promoted.
