Be Still, And Know God
In Psalms 46.10, we learn that God desires for us to be still and know that He is God.
Being still in our lives is not easy, is it? Someone or something constantly pulls us in one direction or another. Many of us find ourselves unable to think clearly about anything because of the busyness of our lives.
With Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD,) I use a method by which I count down from one hundred to zero. It takes numerous tries, but eventually I am able to do this without anything sidelining my thinking process. By the time I go from one hundred to zero successfully without interruption, I am able to think more clearly again.
Last year I went to the lake. I do that once a year to visit my aunt. I’ve been doing that for as long as I can remember. However, last year I spent an entire week with her. My aunt, my wife, and I did three things – eat, sleep, read. For the first time in a long, long time, I relaxed completely.
In the mornings, I was up and in her three-seated swing by the lake. While we also had a chaise lounge that someone could relax in, I think, secretively, we all preferred the swing. On that swing, listening to the water splash against the sea wall, hearing the cool breeze blowing around you, one could not help but relax.
It made an impressionable mark on both my wife and me. It impressed us so much that we decided to get a similar swing for our yard at home. It may not be the lake, but perhaps, it will bring us some moments of silence and stillness.
We all live very hectic lives. I know very few people who do little each day. We work or busy ourselves to death, literally, sometimes. God would be the first to tell us that this is not good. In fact, this is why He gives us a day of rest—Sunday.
I know some of you, as I have done in the past, must work on Sunday. If you do, pick another day of the week to be your day of rest and to spend with the Lord and to be still.
We’re investing in a swing. A new hammock may be your preference. Maybe you are a person who needs only a chaise lounge or a recliner.
The point is to find your place in your yard, home, church, park, woods, wherever, and be still and enjoy being in the presence of God, allowing yourself to rest, and allowing God, if He chooses, to speak to you.
