Tree Downs Power Lines on Eatonton Street

Approximately 150 residences in Monticello were without power most of the day last Wednesday after this tree fell on Eatonton Street.

Those residences were in the areas of Blue Ruin, Eatonton Street, Hwy. 16 east, old Hwy. 212, and part of Five Points.

The property owner had hired a tree service to cut down the tree, and it was scheduled to come out Wednesday, but the tree fell shortly before 7 a.m., before the tree service arrived.

The tree and limbs broke three power poles, and damaged three more. One transformer was damaged, and about 200 feet of wire was used to repair the damage.

Mutual aid from the cities of Covington and Griffin came in to help. Monticello’s entire electric department worked all day as did all the street department and the engineer. In addition, there was a four man crew from Griffin and three man crew from Covington.

Both lanes of the road were shut down for about half the day, and only one lane was open for about 12 hours. Cable television was also affected.

The electric department expressed its appreciation to everyone for their patience while they did the work to restore power to the area.
