Ulysses Carter
A celebration of life for Ulysses Carter was held Thursday, June 22, at St. John C.M.E. Church in Monticello. Dr. Lavonia K. McIntyre, pastor, officiated; Burial was in the Sardis Cemetery.
Mr. Carter was born on January 10, 1941, to the late James and Lily Carter in Jasper County. He was an excellent student at the Jasper County Training School, earning him the Class Valedictorian in 1959.
On June 14, 2017, Mr. Carter departed this life to live eternally with the Lord. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles Carter, James H. Carter, Jr., Eddie James carter, Hurie D. Carter, and Altheus Carter.
He knew God had blessed him for a better life, therefore he enrolled in Knoxville College. While living in Brooklyn with his aunt, he worked as a substitute mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. In 1961, Mr. Carter enrolled at Albany State College where he received a bachelor of science degree in education.
His masters degree was earned at Fort Valley State College, and his Specialist Degree in education from the University of Georgia. Mr. Carter taught school in Morgan County, and the remaining 33 years in the Jasper County Public School System.
He joined St. John C.M.E. Church at an early age. He served on many auxiliary boards and as treasurer for 36 years. His dedication to the city of Monticello, St. John C.M.E. Church and other affiliates earned him the “Mr. St. John” title on November 17, 2013.
He was a very dedicated Masonic brother to Monticello Lodge #329 where he served 24 years as secretary.
Mr. Carter leaves to cherish his memories, a devoted son, Chevis Carter, and many other relatives and friends. He was a truly special caregiver to so many in this community and beyond.
