Lady Hurricanes On A Winning Streak
The Lady Hurricane varsity squad was on four game winning streak headed into Wednesday’s home contest against Mary Persons.
The varsity squad earned a 7-3 victory over the Lady Bulldogs of Morgan County on Tuesday. Head Coach Chris Jenkins said his squad had another solid offensive performance as a team with 10 hits. Mackenzie Tripp (above) went 3-for-4 with a three-run homerun to open up the scoring at home while freshman Bailey Jenkins threw a complete game on the mound for her first varsity win.
On Monday, the Lady Canes defeated G.M.C. 3-1 on the road. Down 1-0 in the seventh inning, Lacey Rutledge and Madison Abbott singled, and O’Neil Sealy drove them in with a two out, two strike three-run homerun. Sealy was also the winning pitcher.
“We struggled at the plate for six innings, but good pitching and a couple of heads-up defensive plays by Mackenzie Abbott, Taylor Bloodworth, and Rutledge sealed the game,” noted Coach Jenkins.
The varsity squad had 16 hits as a team last Thursday in their 9-8 win over Mary Persons in Forsyth. Lauren Mosley, winning pitcher, went 4-for-4 at the plate with a homerun and a double. Mia Jenkins went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in (RBI); Jenkins went 3-for-4 and Jessi Caron went 2-for-4.
The squad began their streak last week with a 3-2 win at Eastside on the road. The coach said it was a well played game by both teams. Sealy was the winning pitcher while Rutledge, Tripp, and Madison Abbott drove in the three runs. Abbott scored the game winner in the bottom of the seventh which drove in Rutledge.
“We struggled a little bit at times with situational hitting early in the game, but were able to manufacture a couple when we needed it most,” said Coach Jenkins of the Eastside victory.
“Great way to open the season against four strong programs. We still have some things to work on and iron out, but I like the effort and the way we’ve competed so far.”
The Lady Canes were to host Mary Persons Wednesday before traveling to McDonough today, August 17 for a 5:30 p.m. contest. The squad will have the weekend off before returning to action at Jackson on Monday, August 21 and at Howard in Macon on Tuesday, August 22.
