Solar Eclipse Prompts Local Activities & Changes

On Monday, August 21, a portion of Earth’s population will experience near total darkness during daylight hours due to the solar eclipse. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, blocking all or part of the sun, according to NASA.
Though Jasper County is not in the direct path of total darkness it is closer than 80 percent of the world’s population. The last total solar eclipse occurred in the early 1900s.
Due to this historic occurrence and its learning opportunity, many local schools have special activities planned. Jasper County Charter School (JCCS) students will have a delay in transportation dismissals from all schools. The system’s science and STEAM departments have developed engaging lessons that will integrate Science and Math. Because safety is of utmost importance, teachers and administrators have reviewed safety plans and all students will be provided solar eclipse glasses.
Shiloh Christian Academy has a “Solar Eclipse Day” planned for its students with educational and fun opportunities.
Piedmont Academy will release students early on Monday at 12:30 p.m. in time for students to return home safely.
In Georgia, the eclipse will begin about 1 p.m. with total darkness happening around 2:30 p.m. hat will integrate science and math to help local students learn about the eclipse.
