The Return of Friday Night Lights
The ‘Canes kicked off their 2017 football season against Athens Christian on Friday, August 25 at Rose Bowl Field, coming up short in a hard fought battle, 28-13.
Contrary to the previous week’s scrimmage against Morgan County, there was no rain which allowed for packed stands full of fans that were ready to welcome the return of Friday night football.
Despite a strong tackle early on in the game, the Eagles of Athens Christian gained several yards early on in the first quarter. With a loose ball recovered by the ‘Canes, excitement was building for the home team; however, the Eagles quickly recovered with a quick pitch for a touchdown.
Early in the second quarter, the ‘Canes were able to regain possession by a turnover on downs but were unable to capitalize on this opportunity. However, later in the quarter, the ‘Canes fought hard and were able to make an interception which led to a touchdown pass in the next drive. At the end of the first half, the ‘Canes trailed 14-6 despite showing lots of grit and intensity.
At the beginning of the third quarter, the ‘Canes recovered another loose ball in the red zone; however, an interception inside the end zone cut the drive short. The Eagles used this opportunity to put more points on the scoreboard despite the defensive efforts of the ‘Canes.
In an attempt to motivate the team, the ‘Canes threw a deep pass that resulted unfortunately in an interception. Back to back loose balls led to the Eagles going down the field to score making the game 28-6 in the fourth quarter. However, a late rally by the ‘Canes brought another touchdown to have the final score of the game 28-13 with an Eagles’ victory.
The ‘Canes demonstrated high levels of intensity and motivation in a well fought opener that yielded the offense 283 yards combined. The next game is scheduled for tomorrow, Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Zebulon against Pike County.
