Ed Hall Wins First Contest

Veteran football contest player Ed Hall claims the honor of being the first football contest winner for 2017.

He collected a $25 prize from Ben Perry at the Bank of Monticello Tuesday for his effort. He also gets his name on the grand prize honor roll for four tickets to the Chick-Fil-A/Peach Bowl.

Mr. Hall was one of two people to get 13 right, and he was closer on the tie-breaker. He beat Braxton Hancock of Albany. He guessed 47 points would be scored in Pike County’s defeat of Monticello Friday. Forty-nine points were scored.

Ten other players also got 12 right to have their names added to the grand prize honor roll. Each time a player correctly guesses the winner of 12 or more games listed, he or she has their name added to the honor roll, and The News will hold a drawing in December of all those who have qualified.

In this week’s contest, both local high schools lost, but several of the other games were quite competitive. Georgia quarterback Jacob Eason sprained a knee ligament in the first quarter of the Appalachian State game. True freshman Jake Fromm will make his first collegiate start at night on the road under the lights of Notre Dame Stadium this Saturday.

It took double overtime to settle Georgia Tech and Tennessee Monday night. Touchdowns were scored by both teams on both overtime possessions, but Georgia Tech went for two points win after the second touchdown, and Tech quarterback TaQuon Marshall was stopped just short of the goal line, losing 42-41. (That game was not in the contest because it was played so late.)

Texas A&M was beating UCLA 44-10 Sunday night before surrendering 35 unanswered points and losing 45-44. It was the second biggest comeback in the history of college football.

Pro games start this week. The Falcons open in Chicago, just a day after the Dawgs play Notre Dame an hour and a half down the road in South Bend.

The contest contains a mix of high school, college and pro games. Remember you can bring your entry in person, fax it or email it only to info@themonticellonews.com. Using another e-mail address could result in your entry not being included.

Anyone can play, and anyone can win. Try your luck. One lucky or savvy player will pick up a $25 prize from Tricia Armistead, C.P.A. Remember to enter by 5 p.m. Friday, and plan to be around Monday to have your picture made and collect your prize.

Contest is on page 10.
