Canes Fall 21-20 to Tigers

The evening excitement ended in heartbreak as the Monticello Hurricanes took on the Green County Tigers and lost 21-20 at Rose Bowl Stadium last Friday.

It was a strong start for the Canes as the Tigers kicked the ball off to begin the game. The Canes were able to immediately go down field and rush for a touchdown giving them a 7-0 lead. On the Tigers first possession, the Canes skillfully forced a fumble inside of Tiger territory to set their offense up with great field position. However, the Canes were able to only kick a field goal, but this did extend the Canes lead to an impressive 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Canes had a weaker start to the second quarter as the Tigers had a quarterback sneak for a touchdown to cut their lead down to 10-7. The Canes, unable to create anything with the ball, were forced to punt the ball back to the Tigers.

However, the Canes defense came up big by putting a hard hit on the quarterback before intercepting the ball and giving possession back to the Canes. For the second time of the game, the Canes were forced to kick a field goal after a strong stop by the defense. This extended the Canes lead to 13-7 at end the first half. This was the first time this season that the Canes led going into halftime.

Going into the second half with the lead, the fans at Rose Bowl were on their feet. It was obvious that the Canes were looking to come up with a few more defensive stops to secure a strong lead. With this mind set, the Canes defense was able to force a fumble and a three and out, leaving the Tiger offense useless in the third quarter. Due to this, the Canes offense was able to go down and score a touchdown giving them a healthy 20-7 lead heading into the final period of play.

A poor start to the fourth quarter led to the Tigers scoring a touchdown cutting down the Canes lead to 20-14. Sadly, the Canes offense was unable to cause any problems for the Tigers as they punted the ball away. With both teams looking to make a big play, the Tigers, unfortunately, were the ones to come up big scoring a touchdown which led to the Tigers taking the lead for the first time in the game.

Despite a big kickoff return, the Canes were unable to take advantage of this as time expired, and the game ended at a score of 21-20 with the Tigers’ unforeseen victory over the Canes.

The Canes face off against Jackson County next week away from home as the Canes hope to pick up their first win of the season.
