Cougars Fall on Homecoming
Piedmont Academy’s varsity football team has reached its bye week and will use the time to begin preparing for its 2017 region schedule.
The Cougars completed their non-region slate of games last Friday falling 41-7 to Brentwood during homecoming. After an off night this Friday, Piedmont will begin region play at Windsor Academy on Friday, Oct. 6.
Multiple turnovers hurt the Cougars this past Friday against Brentwood.
“Five first half turnovers make it hard to compete,” said head coach Wes Tanner. “After the first one, things just steam rolled from there. Every time we turned it over Brentwood took advantage of it.”
The bye week comes at a much-needed time, Tanner said. Piedmont has already played seven games this season.
“We will concentrate on working on us this week,” the coach said. “We will focus on getting better and not so much a particular opponent this week. It’s just something we have to take one step at a time.”
The Cougars are scheduled to practice each day through Thursday of this week with on-the-field work as well as film study.
The region schedule begins will Piedmont returns to game action on October 6.
“We still have the whole season in front of us,” Tanner said.
Piedmont defensive coordinator Michael Wilson echoed those comments.
“We are 0-0 and have nine days of practice to get ready for the most important three games of the season,” Wilson said Monday. “We have to keep that in mind as we proceed. This week we have to work on us. That includes how we approach practice to how we go from drill-to-drill to how we execute during team work. We can’t take this week for granted. We need to use it to get better.”
The Cougars appear to be on a more even footing with its region opponents as compared to the non-region slate this season. Piedmont’s overall schedule is regarded as the toughest in the GISA for 2017.
