Monticello Celebrates Homecoming

Cambria Stone was crowned Homecoming Queen and Jessica Moore was crowned Miss Hurricane at the annual homecoming festivities Friday evening for Jasper County High School. Zoe Arena was named first runner-up. The queens were crowned by last year’s queen Rileigh Evans.

Members of the court were (top photo, left to right) Keriddan Benton, Abriel Sanders, Abby Rose Scott, Mackenzy Babb, Kaitlyn Pope, Morgan Clement, Zoe Arena, Miss Hurricane Jessica Moore, Homecoming Queen Cambria Stone, Rylee Huff, Terrica Johnson, Nykeria Greene, Taylor Wages, Jessi Caron, and Ashton Mooney.

Court members were elected by their individual grade level classes. The homecoming queen was elected by popular vote of the entire student body. Many clubs and athletic groups nominated girls for Miss Hurricane, then Miss Moore was chosen as 2017 Miss Hurricane by the senior class.

Jeff Cain was crowned “Mr. JCHS” by Miss Hurricane Jessica Moore during the pep rally on Thursday afternoon, after competing in the pageant earlier in the week.

As part of homecoming spirit week, each grade level competed for “the most spirited class” by participating in various dress-up days and contests. The senior class ultimately won the overall competition.

“Overall this was a great week for us at JCHS,” said principal Buddy Cain. “The students showed spirit each day by dressing appropriately for the dress-up days, and then that spirit and pride carried over into the homecoming ceremony Friday night. I’m so proud of our student body.”

The students culminated the Spirit Week with a homecoming dance Saturday evening. Homecoming coordinator Veronica Bouhana expressed appreciation to the students, teachers, parents and community people who helped make this year’s homecoming a success.

At the end of Saturday’s game (see story), the visiting team’s band played before Monticello did its halftime show, followed by a performance by the Blazin’ Brigade from Valdosta State University. The finale was a performance by the Marching Hurricanes and the Blazin’ Brigade together.

A story and photos in last week’s Monticello News featured the Monticello Marching Hurricanes from the Oconee Classic Marching Competition festival on Saturday, Sept. 30, and Monticelloans performing with Valdosta. The band did very well at the festival, which was hosted by Baldwin High School in Milledgeville.

The Marching Hurricanes received superiors in overall effect, music performance, and visual performance for an overall superior rating, which is the highest rating given out. Additionally, their overall band score of 88.25 was the highest the band has ever received at any contest in the history of the band. That score placed them higher than eight other bands at the competition, including two 4A bands and one 5A band, which are more than twice the size of most 2A bands.

Additionally, drum majors Ciara Christopher and Thomas Cooper recieved a superior, and the percussion and color guard both received excellent ratings.

The Marching Hurricanes will compete in their final contest of the season on October 21 when they travel to Warner Robins for the Heart of Georgia Marching Invitational.
